Authors meet with civil protection

Five days filled with engaging meetings, talks, lectures, and, above all, stories – this is what the exhibition space of the Department at the XXXVI edition of the Turin International Book Fair offered from May 9 to 13, 2024. The focus was on the eQuiLIBRI project, which aims to build an open and shared library of civil protection.

Some of these stories took center stage during discussions with civil protection experts and the editors of the multimedia magazine “Lucy,” a project partner. Today, we are releasing the complete recordings of these meetings to share the discussions and questions with a broader audience.

Here are some important passages that specifically relate to civil protection topics.

Franco Arminio with Roberto Giarola and Pierumberto Ferrero. How many people live in a place without knowing what is there, not knowing what happened to the river, what kind of soil is under their house, or the history of the territory, not knowing what happened in that place before? Thoughtfully inhabiting a place is the first step in ensuring civil protection.

Nicola Lagioia and Titti Postiglione. A human landscape intertwines with a physical, natural landscape that civil protection deals with daily and during emergencies. Due to this diversity, applying a single model to different territories and communities is not feasible. Rather than a model, each emergency serves as a testing ground for best practices.

Marco Rossari with Eleonora Panunzi and Matteo De Giuli. A volcano casts a shadow over the characters’ lives, influencing their behaviors and life choices. This is mirrored in the main character’s trembling hands, resembling an earthquake-shaken earth. The allure and terror of living in an endangered landscape reflected in both fiction and reality.

Nadia Terranova with Roberto Giarola and Giada Arena. The earthquake of Messina and Reggio Calabria in 1908 appears to indissolubly unite two communities divided by a strip of sea. Anyone born in a territory struck by a great catastrophe is born within a deep wound.

Donatella di Pietrantonio with Riccardo Rita and Lorenzo Gramatica. The fragility of the territories is entwined with the people who inhabit them, torn between staying and leaving, between hope and resignation. This is the shared story of the inland Italian territories, marginalized and emptied by depopulation. These territories would need an authentic vision for the future.

Nicola Lagioia and Fabrizio Curcio with Giusi Fasano. Information alone is not enough. We have compelling data indicating the need to change lifestyles and development models. We must transform information into knowledge, knowledge into beauty, beauty into love. An inner, anthropological, spiritual, and philosophical change is essential.

Francesca Mannocchi with Fabrizio Curcio and Irene Graziosi. Now more than ever, it is crucial to narrate the recent history to young girls and boys and explain that nothing happens by accident. Anyone reporting about crises bears a great informational responsibility, whether it is an international conflict or a major emergency.

Roberto Gagnor and Mattia Surroz with Riccardo Rita and Maurilio Silvestri. In times of danger, people become more responsive. This triggers something that in the comic strip “L’attimo decisivo” becomes a superpower, which appears on the skin of the main characters in the form of a tattoo. The superpower is awareness, a human superpower that can belong to anyone.

Michelangelo Pistoletto and Chiara Belliti with Mariacristina Giovannini and Pierumberto Ferrero. Like medicine, civil protection provides both treatment in crises and preventive care, which aligns with the concept of “preventive peace.” It is fraternal and transversal, and it serves others. It implies a non-egocentric approach to the world, which is essential for building civilized and democratic communities. Care lies in relationships with others, as no one can care alone
